Malta MEP 2009 – 2013
Claudette Abela Baldacchino was born on February 17, 1973, she is a Maltese MEP elected for the first time during the 2009 European elections. In 2013 she was appointed Deputy Prime Minister in charge of Foreign Affairs. As a member of the Labour Party, she sits in the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament. Claudette was part of the Committee on Internal Market and Consumer Protection and the Delegation for relations with Australia and New Zealand.
Claudette Abela Baldacchino graduated in Social Studies in 1999 and a degree of social administration in 2005. Having worked in the public service, she became known as a journalist and presenter of television news producer for television, radio and press between 1995 and 2011.
She entered politics as a city councilor and deputy mayor of Qrendi from 1996 to 2013, secretary of the local committee Qrendi, youth section, member and vice-president of the Association of Local Councils and member of the committee of the regions between 2005 and 2013. She was president of the Regjun Xlokk (2005-2009) and Regjun Nofsinhar (2009-2013) and Member of the Executive Committee and International Secretary of the Women’s Section of the Labour Party between 1998 and 2011, As well, she was president of the local administration and member of the Labour Party from 2009 to 2011.
Member of the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe, she was rapporteur on services of general interest in rural areas from 2005 to 2013 Vice-President of the PES Group in the Committee of the Regions, designated coordinator the PES manifesto for the 2009 elections to the European Parliament by the PES Group in the Committee of the Regions. She was also Vice-President of the Socialist Group in the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe between 2009 and 2013, and a rapporteur on the roadmap for equality between women and men and the Communication from the European Commission and Council Directive on non-discrimination.
