Richard Corbett is an Advisor to Herman van Rompuy, the first full time President of the European Council. He advises the President on political and institutional questions and handles his
relations with the European Parliament and with national parliaments.
Previously, Richard served as a Labour MEP from 1996 to 2009, representing Yorkshire & Humber. He was on the Labour party Regional Board and National Policy Forum. He was Deputy Leader of the Labour MEPs.
Richard sat on a number of Parliamentary Committees, but his particular expertise was in constitutional affairs. He was spokesperson for Labour and for the whole of the Socialist Group in the European Parliament on the Constitutional Committee for ten years, was Parliament’s rapporteur on the Constitutional Treaty and again on the Lisbon Treaty, and was also rapporteur on revising Parliament’s Rules of Procedure .
Richard is co-author of the standard university textbook, The European Parliament and has many other publications to his name, including The Treaty of Maastricht: From Conception to Ratification; Combating Mythology and Changing Reality: the Debate on the Future of Europe; The EU – Who makes the Decisions?; The European Union: How does it work? and The European Parliament’s Role in Closer EU Integration.
Prior to being an MEP, Richard worked in the voluntary sector, and then as a civil servant, after having gained a BA at Oxford and a PhD at Hull.
