Environmental Sustainability of Livestock Production

Logo Sustainable LivestockEU40 organised a debate entitled “Environmental sustainability of livestock production” as part of the trilogy “Sustainable EU Livestock: Actions Towards an Innovative, Climate-Smart and Competitive Future”. The first debate took place on the 27th of April 2016, from 12:00 to 14:00h, room PHS 5B001 at the European Parliament.

The debate was co-hosted by MEP Michela Giuffrida (S&D), MEP Jasenko Selimovic (ALDE), MEP Franc Bogovic (EPP) and MEP Daniel Dalton (ECR).

This debate is part of a trilogy and aimed at targeting the following topics:

– Improve the impact of livestock on the environment and climate;
– Foster innovation in R&D, policy and at the farm, as well as a knowledge-based livestock sector.

Jean-Louis Peyraud, President Animal Task Force, Nick Major, FEFAC Chairman of the PEF Pilot Project on Feed, Andrea Rosati, Secretary General of the European Federation of Animal Science (EAAP), Jim O’toole, Director, Meat and Livestock Division, Board Bia, Ireland and Chairman of the SAI Platform Beef Working Group, Jaap Petraeus, Manager Corporate Environmental affairs & Sustainability at Royal FrieslandCampina, Netherlands, and member of the SAI Platform Dairy Working Group, and Hanna Hamina, Executive Director of the Finnish Poultry Association, were present on the panel. Aldo Longo, Director for General Aspects of Rural Development and Research, DG AGRI, European Commission delivered a key-note speech.

We welcomed as participants key journalists, Cabinet Members of relevant DGs, Agriculture and Environment, relevant Council / Perm Rep officials from the Member States, MEPs and MEPs’ assistants, as well as policy advisors from the political groups and European Parliament Secretariats, scientists and relevant interest groups and think-tanks within the Brussels Bubble.

This trilogy is co-organised with our corporate partner Elanco Animal Health, a division of Eli Lilly and company.
