EU40 – the network of young MEPs together with the Fair Standards Alliance, organized a breakfast expert roundtable on the ‘Internet of Things: Innovation and fair access to standards’ on Tuesday, the 10th of July from 8:30 to 10:00am, at the European Parliament. The debate was hosted by MEP Lambert van Nistelrooij (IMCO Substitute, EPP Group) and MEP Nadja Hirsch (ALDE Group).

A new technological revolution is underway. In the Internet of Things (#IoT) world, everyday products will be smart devices working on the 5G mobile network, from connected cars to smart meters.

The legal framework that will be decided by policy makers in terms of the development and access to standardised technologies will impact not only the uptake of IoT development, but also the price of tomorrow’s IoT products. Decisions made now will create the path for innovation, and ultimately economic growth and consumer welfare in Europe.

The debate gathered the following speakers:

·      Heinz Polsterer, Deutsche Telekom
·      Sylvie Vollet, AirTies Wireless Networks (SME)
·      Martyn Lee, Sky

We were delighted to have a cross-industry discussion with policy makers and experts from the digital industry on how to make #IoT a reality in Europe.
